Donna Winrich
Donna Winrich stepped out of the world of corporate, global sales to start an apparel business selling Caftans and swimwear cover-ups. OKI Caftans (pronounced Oak Island Caftans) is a sustainable, ethically produced fashion start-up. Caftans (not to be confused with muu-muus!) are a retro fashion that is making a comeback. Donna is using sumptuous fabrics, such as a batik that is made in Java, Indonesia. The workers in this factory have many benefits not usually found in batik production such as a living wage, rudimentary health insurance, lunch and on-site childcare. Another fabric is a 100% Organic Cotton gauze, made in America. She is producing her caftans in a North Carolina cut and sew factory that employs and trains differently-abled persons. Fast fashion is cheap, mass-produced clothing that is often unethically produced (think child labor horror stories we all grew up hearing – these practices are still going on) or uses fabrics that take a toll on the environment. Donna hopes OKI Caftans will be part of a growing trend to create beautiful, quality garments that the wearer can feel good about.
