Do fish eat algae?
You might be glad to hear the answer is yes. If you have excess algae in your aquarium, you can remove this naturally with algae eater fish. This way, you can introduce new creatures to your underwater family and keep all the nutrients within your little ecosystem.
There are lots of fish that eat algae, but they vary in maintenance and aesthetics. We’ve put together a list of the fish that are easiest to keep alive and happy—and that also come with an interesting look.
1. Bristlenose Pleco
You can tell from the Bristlenose Pleco’s name that this fish has a face to remember.
And they’ve got more to offer as well. They get along with lots of other fish species, so you can likely add them to a tank with existing fish with no problem. They’re easy to take care of and come in a variety of eye-catching colors.
2. Rubber Lip Pleco
The Rubber Lip Pleco is not as well-known as its bristle-nosed cousin, but it’s just as useful and easy to take care of.
And as you can tell from the name, it too has an interesting facial feature. It has a large mouth that might remind you of a frog or big catfish. If you’re looking for unique algae eater fish, this is a great option.
3. Twig Catfish
And for tiny catfish that don’t look like the big type at all, you can look to the twig catfish.
These fish really do look like little twigs swimming around in the tank. You can keep them with some other fish, but they (along with the next type of fish) might be threatened by Cichlids.
These fish are easy to take care of, but they will need some dietary supplements in addition to the algae.
4. Otocinclus Catfish
Otocinclus catfish are cute and tiny. They’re only two inches long, and they come in beautifully patterned earth tones.
If you’re thinking about getting these fish, you should invest in a small community of them. They’re happier together, and their small size means they won’t take up much space.
5. Siamese Algae Eater Fish
These fish are so good at eating algae it’s in the name. It will eat algae right off live plant leaves.
If you want to get some Siamese Algae Eaters, though, you’ll have to provide a bit more than just algae. They’ll need some supplementary food, including a protein source.
6. Doctor Fish
Have you ever heard of the fish that nibble on dead skin for natural exfoliation?
These little nibblers, called Doctor Fish, might just be the perfect solution to algae build-up in your aquarium. They are even less picky than Siamese Algae Eaters, which explains why they enjoy eating dead skin cells. They’ll eat up lots and lots of aquarium algae.
