Good evidence shows that flexible working options benefit employees and that many employees want to work this way.
A 2020/21 study: Forever Flex surveyed UK employees and found that 72% want to continue working from home, A very similar number of Australians (73%) reported the same and indications are that it is similar in the USA.
There seems little doubt that most staff prefer hybrid work with most opting for 2 or 3 days working from home. Despite this, it does not seem to be healthy for many of them with 80% reporting that working from home harmed their mental health!
Hybrid and remote work of course has pros and cons for organisations too. Benefits include hiring and talent retention, which is very important in low unemployment environments. But there are significant challenges, especially with fully remote work in terms of engagement and productivity.
How can you overcome the challenges? For a start:
- Train managers in specific coaching type leadership to enhance engagement (a key factor underpinning productivity).
- Use enhanced interview and assessment techniques to get the right people into roles (you must use a good psychometric trait personality instrument such as Pario Professional – never use type instruments, such as the MBTI, for selection).
- Design hybrid policies that help keep staff engaged (perhaps do not allow both Monday and Friday working at home?)
Overall, it is about continually developing staff at all levels. It is really about creating a coaching culture within your business.
